Horse Hair & Wild Turkey Feather Raku
Framed: 22.5″ x 18″

Each tile is hand-cut and smoothed down before leaving to dry. Once dried, the tiles are loaded in the kiln and fired. After the first firing is complete, I fire each individual tile, one-by-one, and take the tile out of the kiln at the optimal temperature and apply horse hair & wild turkey feathers to the tile. This techniques burns the carbon from the horse hair & turkey feathers into the clay. If the tile is too hot, the carbon will burn out – too cool and the carbon will not burn in. A dance I am so passionate about – I play with different temperatures to create more depth in my wall pieces. I then assymble each tile until I feel and see that they are just right. I then adhere each tile to it’s custom frame that is ready-too-hang. This peice features a wire for hanging. The hair in this peice comes from a friend who lost their pony and the feathers come from a friend who turkey hunts. Using this technique, I get to preserve the animals life and create art peices that will bring such radiant & unique energy into your home!
