Horse Hair Raku

Each tile is hand-cut and smoothed down before leaving to dry. Once dried, the tiles are loaded in the kiln and fired. After the first firing is complete, I fire each individual tile, one-by-one, and take the tile out of the kiln at the optimal temperature and apply horse hair to the tile. This techniques burns the carbon from the horse hair into the clay. If the tile is too hot, the carbon will burn out – too cool and the carbon will not burn in. A dance I am so passionate about – I play with different temperatures to create more depth in my wall pieces. I then assymble each tile (this peice took a couple of days) until I feel and see that they are just right. I then adhere each tile to its custom frame that is ready-to-hang. This peice features 2 D-Rings for hanging. The hair in this peice comes from a friend who lost their pony. Using this technique, I get to preserve that animals life and create art peices that will bring such radiant & unique energy into your home!
